Title The International Trauma Studies program at New York University
Dates October 5, 2000 to June 15, 2000
Synopsis The ITSP-NYU, committed to the understanding, prevention, and treatment of trauma, offers two certificate programs to professionals working with traumatized populations.

Description Program Description

To fulfill its mission, the International Trauma Studies Program (ITSP) offers two certificate training programs for professionals working in the trauma field. The first, The Comprehensive Course in Trauma Studies, as core program, provides a multidisciplinary overview of trauma theory, prevention and interventions. A second course, The Advanced Clinical Training in Trauma Prevention and Treatment, builds on the work accomplished in the core course and is specific to clinicians who are practicing in the field. In addition, the ITSP encourages and supports student involvement in global and community projects endorsed and/or developed by faculty members.

The Comprehensive Course in Trauma Studies

This two semester foundation course provides the participant with a full exploration of the trauma field: a comprehensive framework that includes the history and current theories in the field, the nature of trauma, how trauma affects human, social and cultural systems, the professional's response to trauma, developmental considerations, traumatic stress and the family and community. Participants will analyze the evolution of trauma over time: from event through assessment, intervention and recovery. Controversies and new developments in the field are addressed as are the social and cultural dimensions of trauma. Finally, the representation of trauma in the arts, literature and in the media will be discussed. The lectures and discussion are led by experts on the faculty as well as invited guest speakers who are pioneers in the field. This course is designed for a multi-disciplinary audience: health care providers, mental health professionals, attorneys, human rights advocates, community activists, journalists and media professionals, academics and artists. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance and, for those who qualify, continuing education credit will be offered (nursing, medicine, social work, psychology).

The Course meets weekly (Thursdays, 6:00-9:00pm)

The Tuition is $1500 per semester.

The Advanced Clinical Training in Trauma Prevention and Treatment

This intensive, two-semester course offers the clinician the opportunity to develop and refine clinical skills based on a trauma intervention model. In addition to clinical case discussion, the course integrates didactic and experiential learning methods for each session. Invited speakers will present in-depth explorations of their own research/clinical work and writings on topics in the trauma field. The synthesis of essential topics required for clinical skill refinement will be facilitated through case analysis and discussion, as well as student and faculty presentations. All of the work done in this course will be based on a trauma framework, and cover topics such as transference and counter-transference issues, self-care, re-traumatization, assessment and treatment issues for individual, groups and families and prevention strategies. In addition to coursework, the ITSP has arrangements with clinics and agencies in the New York area to provide practicum, clinical experience, and therapeutic work with trauma survivors. The Comprehensive Course in Trauma Studies is a co-requisite or pre-requisite for participants in this advanced course. This advanced course is designed for clinicians who are entering the clinical setting or are already practicing with individual, family or group populations. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance and, for those who qualify, continuing education credit will be offered (nursing, medicine, social work, psychology). The Advanced Course is open only to licensed or license-eligible professionals.

The course meets biweekly for one full day (Fridays, 9:30-5:00pm).

The tuition is $1000 per semester.
