Abstract (AB): This newsletter article focuses on the risks associated with HIV infection for victims of sexual assault. The article presents advice to HIV-test counselors for supporting clients who have experienced sexual assault and offers a variety of referrals.

The article advises that the counselor address the risk of HIV infection promptly, even though many assault victims do not consider or are unwilling to discuss the possibility of transmission. The article explains that there are no standard protocols for sexual assault victims in terms of prophylaxis. Implications for counseling victims, specific suggestions for victims of domestic violence, and rape prevention awareness are also considered.
