| Title | Deaf Domestic Violence Program - CSD |
| Contributor | Marc Dubin |
| Security Level | 1 |
| Synopsis | Program to meet the special language and cultural needs of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the Twin Cities metropolitan area |
| Description | CSD of Minnesota began the Deaf Domestic Violence Program in January 2000 to meet the special language and cultural needs of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Deaf Domestic Violence is based on the model program established in Seattle, Washington fourteen (14) years ago by Abused Deaf Womens Advocacy Services (ADWAS). This program fills a gap in domestic violence services provided in Minnesota. Deaf and hard of hearing individuals will have access to information that will empower them to sustain, develop and strengthen healthy personal and family relationships. Through educational outreach, non-deaf service providers will be equipped with knowledge about deaf culture and will be able to refer appropriate individuals to this specialized programming for assistance in dealing with domestic violence issues. Domestic Violence means behaviors that are used to get and keep power and control over another person. Domestic Violence doesnt always have to be physical, like hitting someone. It can be threats, intimidation (make you afraid), emotional or verbal abuse, harassment, forced sex or sexual assault. It can happen in straight, gay or lesbian relationships. No matter your age, sex, education, job religion or color, it can happen to anyone. The violent person is responsible for his/her behavior and only he or she can decide to change. If you are being abused, it is NOT your fault. Hitting is a crime. CSD of Minnesota has a 24-Hour TTY Emergency Crisis Hotline for deaf individuals who experience domestic violence or sexual assault call: (612) 619-2323 Deaf Domestic Violence depends heavily upon a volunteer network to handle the 24-hour crisis hotline and safe homes. Program staff work with individuals to seek appropriate services and help to advocate for services needed.
